You have to be a speedy reader because there’s so so much to read

In Part-1 of this post, I made the case for why reading comprehension practice is important. This part provides pointers to free resources that make it easy to get your kids going on it.

ReadWorks.Org

What if I told you there was a website that was:

  • Free
  • Accessible from laptop, tablet, or smartphone
  • Has fun, educational, and engaging material
  • Can automatically score most answers except a couple of free text ones per passage
  • Can be tailored to your kids grade

This is exactly what readworks.org is. I can’t recommend this site enough. I am using it with my kids from elementary to high school. The questions emphasize reading comprehension, and most of them are multiple choice. When I first came across it, I couldn’t believe that such a site exists. It still seems too good to be true. One word of caution: it is tailored for schools, not families. But there is nothing to stop you from creating “classrooms” for each of your kids, or even have them in one big virtual classroom but assign them different pieces depending on their level. The interface is easy enough that you’ll figure it out. Get your kids hooked on it. Create a reward system where the more the do, the more points they earn. They’ll thank you as they get older.

This website is so well known that many students will have already encountered it at school. To be continued.
